Be it the distinct beat of a song by Usher, a heart-lifting love song by Taylor Swift or a beautiful melody from one of Beethoven’s classical pieces, music is able to get us on our feet, rock to the beat or simply sing along. The impact of music on us is quite clear. Dancers too use this as a form of expression.
In dance, dancers move gracefully across the floor with the intention of telling their audience a message or story. With the accompaniment of music, this form of expression is further impelled. The Republic Cultural Centre, otherwise known as TRCC, is exactly where such stories are told.
TRCC is an integral part of Republic Polytechnic (RP). Designed by Maki & Associates (Japan), the building exudes elegant simplicity with a balance of aesthetics and functionality reflecting their goal to nurture appreciation for the arts and culture. Under its unique fan-shaped roof are rooms and studios for practices, rehearsals and recordings, not to forget a 1,000-seat theatre that will be hosting the Momentum dance showcase.
"Momentum is the force that drives us. In dance, we use this energy to translate our thoughts and emotions to meaningful movements to engage and move the audience", is how Zaini Tahir, the Artistic Director of the festival, puts it. As the name “Momentum” suggests, TRCC planned this dance fest with the intention to present a myriad of dance genres. For the third year running, it will showcase some of the best dance groups found in schools and institutions of higher learning.

There were also activities conducted in relation to the dance performances. From 1st to 27th May, the public was treated to activities such as dance workshops, film screenings, a photo exhibition and a dance dialogue. One of last year’s highlights was the free four-day dance workshop conducted by professional dance practitioners. Some of the topics covered were Intermediate Hip Hop, Bollywood, Fusion Contemporary and Modern Contemporary Malay. Participants were able to pick up a couple of dance moves while some might have even realised their talent for dance!
The highlight of the festival is the two night dance showcase. The audience will get to enjoy the sophisticated movements of the dancers, which will be further emphasised on the beautifully-set stage. Momentum has seen sold-out tickets in which it featured award-winning dance groups such as Deyi Secondary School and St. Andrew's Junior College, which have scored Gold with Honours and Gold respectively at the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF).
So what are you waiting for? Themed 'Bold and Beyond', this year's Momentum will set the standards of all dance performances! Tickets are limited, so be sure to act fast before they are all gone!
