Diploma in Renewable Energy Engineering (R41)

About the Programme

Global warming is one of the most serious challenges today and the pursuit of renewable alternative energy sources has become extremely important for governments all over the world. Singapore has positioned itself to be a Global Clean Energy hub to support the Clean Energy sector globally. The Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) has secured pioneering clean energy investments in some of these areas over the last 2 years, and the clean energy industry is expected to be valued at S$1.7billion and will generate up to 7,000 jobs by 2015. On the other hand, the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) has also announced in their second Green Building Masterplan to have at least 80% of the buildings in Singapore Green Mark certified by 2030. This will provide a boost to the 'green collar' job market, and some 18,000 green specialists will be needed over the next 10 years in the development, design, construction, operation and maintenance of green buildings.

The Diploma in Renewable Energy Engineering (DREE) was designed to cater to the increasing demand for graduates equipped with engineering skills and knowledge in renewable energy technologies, in particular, green building design and energy management and audit. Other aspects of clean and renewable energy will be extensively covered to align with the Singapore energy roadmap.

Programme Objectives

This Diploma aims to nurture knowledgeable and enterprising young professionals who can apply their skills to the demands of renewable energy industry. By the end of the course, you will be adept in the art of problem solving and will be effective learners in this industry. Students will learn to make the best use of knowledge and practical skills in renewable energy system design to enhance energy saving and utilisation, as well as in the promotion of green building design, audit and maintenance for existing and new buildings.

The curriculum prepares students by offering them both management and technical subjects. The completion of this programme will provide students with the necessary know-how to become competent professionals. This will allow our graduates to effectively meet the growing manpower demand of the renewable energy industry.

Career Prospects

The focus areas of the diploma in green building technologies are relevant to meet the needs of the Clean Energy industry. A large proportion of the jobs in this industry in Singapore would be in the professional and skilled categories, such as engineers, associate engineers and technicians.

Graduates of this diploma are prepared for jobs such as energy specialist, consultant or technologist. They can also work as associate engineers dealing with manufacturing, R&D and system integration.

Graduates may also choose to pursue further education and to this end, all our diploma programmes are designed to meet the requirements for advanced standing in local and overseas Institutions of Higher Learning (IHLs).
