What is Information and Communications Technology?

Information and Communications Technology is an integral part of our daily lives. It is about using technology to improve our standard of living, our productivity in the workplace, ways of communicating between businesses and with each other, and many other facets of daily activity. The world has become smaller because of the continuously exponential advances in ICT. The Internet and World Wide Web are but some of the most famous instances of ICT in action. On a more personal level, your mobile phone and PDA were also made possible by an Information and Communications Technologist!

ICT is unsurprisingly one of the most dynamic sectors of the worldwide economy. In fact, advances in ICT often make possible advances in many other spheres of human activity – buying and selling can now take place virtually while music and pictures can be exchanged and accessed in an instant. The use of computers has revolutionised the way we work, and brought unheard of savings to firms and factories the world over. The application of super computers to the mysteries of Biomedical Science also promise to transform the way we understand and treat human life.

The exponential rate of growth in ICT makes it one of the most challenging – and interesting – fields in which to be. How do we make networks faster? How do we make faster networks work for us? How do we want ever increasingly powerful computers to manage and process information? How do we want an ever growing volume of information interpreted for and presented to us?
