The School of Sports, Health and Leisure

Introduction

Why Sports is a growing industry in Singapore

The Singapore Government is committed to growing sports as a viable industry. By 2010, the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) aims to double the size of our local sports industry to S$1.4 billion, to make Singapore one of the top ten sporting nations in Asia, and to increase our population’s sports participation rate to 50%.

A S$500 million Sporting Singapore Fund was launched in 2001 by the Government to achieve its vision for a Sporting Singapore. For FY2005 specifically,

  • S$61 million will be spent on National Sports Associations (NSAs) to promote Sports Excellence, Sports for All, sports management, and other support schemes to raise the standards of our national athletes and coaches;
  • S$14.6 million will be spent on the Singapore Sports School (which started operations on 5 January 2004, with an initial intake of 140 students and a target enrolment of 600 students in steady state);
  • S$38 million will be spent on Team Singapore initiatives to encourage Singaporeans to engage in sports regularly through partnership promotion, public education and raising awareness, as well as to promote the values of fighting spirit, teamwork and national pride;
  • S$18.8 million will be spent on developing the sports industry by strengthening sports-related businesses in Singapore, staging international sports events and preparing for the development of the Sports Hub, which has a separate trench of funds already approved by the Cabinet. The Sports Hub, which will replace the existing National Stadium and its surrounding sports and leisure infrastructure, will host international sporting and leisure events; and
  • An additional S$300 million was recently committed to the Sporting Singapore Fund to sustain sporting initiatives through to 2010, as well as open up more state land and school fields for public use, and provide for more “software” and manpower costs.

This bold vision for a Sporting Singapore, Government funding and a growing sports industry, will create demand for suitably educated sports and leisure practitioners.

Sports Excellence at Republic Polytechnic

Our school is committed to grooming suitably qualified professionals for the growing sports and leisure industry. In essence, the three sub-sections of Sports, Health and Leisure are intrinsically related, where:

  • Sports relates to physical activity, exercise and the sports industry
  • Health addresses the issues of fitness, wellness and disease prevention
  • Leisure refers to active lifestyles, outdoor education, recreation and sports  or leisure tourism

With Singapore aiming to be one of the top ten sporting nations in Asia, there will be a demand for sports science specialists to help advance the performance of competitive athletes. Further, the growing fitness and wellness industry will create demand for well trained fitness and personal trainers.

The development of Singapore Sports Hub at Kallang and the Integrated Resorts at Marina Bay and Sentosa, all to be completed by 2011, present many opportunities. The sports and leisure industry will continue to grow and mature with new and exciting prospects. With the government's strong aim to promote the leisure sector, graduates from this programme will be well positioned to play significant roles in many areas within the sports business and leisure enterprises.

The new Diploma in Outdoor and Adventure Learning aims to support the emerging needs of the outdoor and adventure learning industry. The programme will prepare graduates to lead groups in outdoor education and adventure pursuits. With increased demand for programmes that build resilience, ruggedness in Singapore youth, this diploma will lay the foundations for outdoor and adventure education.

SHL provides students the flexibility to pursue their education in a holistic manner through involvement in research and industry related projects. Students are trained to acquire specialised knowledge and skills to begin their professional path in the vibrant sports and leisure industry,

SHL firmly believes in developing professionals in the various fields of the sports industry and to this end, it has embarked on a series of initiatives to provide multiple opportunities for students to engage in industry specific skills and experience.
