Why Sports is a growing industry in Singapore
The Singapore Government is committed to growing sports as a viable industry. By 2010, the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) aims to double the size of our local sports industry to S$1.4 billion, to make Singapore one of the top ten sporting nations in Asia, and to increase our population’s sports participation rate to 50%.
A S$500 million Sporting Singapore Fund was launched in 2001 by the Government to achieve its vision for a Sporting Singapore. For FY2005 specifically,
- S$61 million will be spent on National Sports Associations (NSAs) to promote Sports Excellence, Sports for All, sports management, and other support schemes to raise the standards of our national athletes and coaches;
- S$14.6 million will be spent on the Singapore Sports School (which started operations on 5 January 2004, with an initial intake of 140 students and a target enrolment of 600 students in steady state);
- S$38 million will be spent on Team Singapore initiatives to encourage Singaporeans to engage in sports regularly through partnership promotion, public education and raising awareness, as well as to promote the values of fighting spirit, teamwork and national pride;
- S$18.8 million will be spent on developing the sports industry by strengthening sports-related businesses in Singapore, staging international sports events and preparing for the development of the Sports Hub, which has a separate trench of funds already approved by the Cabinet. The Sports Hub, which will replace the existing National Stadium and its surrounding sports and leisure infrastructure, will host international sporting and leisure events; and
- An additional S$300 million was recently committed to the Sporting Singapore Fund to sustain sporting initiatives through to 2010, as well as open up more state land and school fields for public use, and provide for more “software” and manpower costs.
This bold vision for a Sporting Singapore, Government funding and a growing sports industry, will create demand for suitably educated sports and leisure practitioners.
